Francis L. O’Connor, 88, of Englewood, Florida passed away Friday, December 23, 2016 at his Charlotte County residence. Born on April 22, 1928 in Arena, New York to the late Ernest and Blanche (Beardsley) O’Connor, he graduated from F. E. Bellows High School then attended Rutgers University. He received a Purple Heart for service in the U.S. Marine Corps during 1947 – 1952 and attained the rank of Sergeant. He participated in the Korean Conflict including the landing at Inchon of September 15, 1950 and also the Chosin Reservoir Campaign. He married his wife Constance Grant on June 28, 1952 and they raised their family in Mamaroneck, New York. He retired as a service supervisor from the New York Telephone Company after 36 years. While in New York he served in the Mamaroneck Fire Department for 40 years and was the Chief of the Department from 1970 – 1975. He also served as Traffic Commissioner and was on the Board of Ethics; was a life member of the Mamaroneck Fire Department, Firemen’s Association and the Fire Chiefs Association of the State of New York. He was a member of the V.F.W., Marine Corps League, 1ST Marine Division Association and the Orleans-Eastham Elks Lodge #2572. Survivors include his loving wife of sixty-four years: Constance; one daughter: Susan O’Connor of Milford, Connecticut; three sons: Robert of Columbus, Ohio; Thomas of Hinsdale, Illinois and William of Dennisport, Massachusetts; sister: Flora Datino of Mamaroneck, New York; eight grandchildren. Interment of his cremains will be in St. Thomas’ Church in Mamaroneck where a memorial service will be held at a later date.
